It’s human nature to have our own thoughts and opinions that are uniquely ours. We’re born to share our ideas, to compare and contrast with the people around us, and to learn their thoughts about certain subjects. Some opinions are commonly heard, while others are outlandish. We love outlandish takes; anything out of the ordinary is bound to spark debate somewhere. Unpopular opinions inspire conversation because they’re able to trigger people, which people find fun for whatever reason. Some students at Franklin High School were willing enough to share their hottest opinions, the viewpoints that they’re going to take a stand on, regardless of what people think.
Minimalist designs are overused
I believe that simplistic designs have been the most popular blueprint in our modern society. Company designs, sports logos, modern houses, and buildings have all seemed to follow the trend of minimalism. I don’t like it at all; I will say it does work in a peaceful environment. That’s where minimalism should be used. Simple designs don’t make your brain process so much and will slow you down to a more relaxed setting. Take the Firefox logo as a bad example; think back to how the design looked when people actually used Firefox, and search up the latest design. Minimalism has its time and place, but it doesn’t have to take over the world.
Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts” did not live up to the hype
Olivia Rodrigo is one of music’s latest mainstream superstars to come up in recent years. Rodrigo released her second studio album last month, titled “Guts.” It capitalizes on the ideas behind her record-breaking debut album “Sour,” which was released in 2021. Izea Paz, a senior, believes otherwise. He gave it a disappointing listen after a friend recommended he check the record out. “I just expected more,” Paz explains. “There [are] parts where she’s just talking in a rapping way, like she’s doing too much. And the instrumentals were kind of whack.” Everyone has their own music taste of course, but Paz’s hot take was not enjoying Rodrigo’s rhyme schemes and production with “Guts.”
Jean shorts should not be a thing
Jorts have been in and out of trend over the years, but people have recently found their own unique ways to bring them back into fashion. If you don’t know what I mean, check out the Franklin hallways and I’m sure you’ll find an example somewhere. Daphne Hinojosa, a junior, knows jorts have been notorious to be hit or miss. “Not everybody styles them correctly. Those who have style can pull it off well, but there’s a lot of people who just can’t do that,” Hinojosa reiterates. “It’s simple; for those who can, can. And for those who can’t, can’t. They shouldn’t even be a thing to be honest.”
Colleen Hoover is overrated
Colleen Hoover is an American author, known for her romance and young adult fiction novels. Her most notable book is “It Ends With Us.” Jiana Alexa Abalos, a senior, does not have a fond impression of the writer, as she believes her writing justifies and romanticizes domestic abuse. “[It Ends With Us] is basically sugar coating domestic abuse by viewing it as someone just losing control,” Abalos explains. “Her writing just isn’t that good … Instead of having Colleen Hoover be your first book, try to expand your options.” Try looking past the popular, most publicized author.
As you grow up, you should not be obligated to take care of your parents
It’s a very common obligation in Asian households, especially in Filipino families, that children have to take care of their elders when they are older. Many parents expect to live with their children’s future families and be provided for in their elder years. This is often because it’s seen as a favor in return for taking care of their kids at a young age. Abe Torquido, a senior, believes that this is something that children should not feel obligated to do. “We’re expected to live with them until we die; many of us still live with our grandparents. We didn’t choose to become a part of this world. They always want to use it as leverage that they took care of us when they decided to have us,” he explains. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the relationship you have with your parents.
Eggs taste horrible
Oabiloe Kelly, a junior, strongly believes that eggs lack the texture and flavor to be as popular of a food item as they are. Eggs are the foundation of the default breakfast plate, as they’re one of the most versatile foods you could ask for. But Kelly couldn’t care less, and he stands on it. “Eggs are just garbage … 90 percent of people who eat eggs don’t even like it, they just eat it to seem normal.” To all the haters who want to come at Kelly, he advises you to “start swimming against the salmon and become your own person.”
Michael Jordan is better than LeBron James
The “Greatest of All Time” (GOAT) debate is the biggest conversation in the sports world, sparking new opinions every day at offices, around lunch tables, and on social media. It’s a runaway race between basketball stars LeBron James and Michael Jordan, both great in their own ways and in their own respected eras in the NBA. Nabaa Hussein, a senior, believes that Michael Jordan is undoubtedly the greatest basketball player of all time. Her reason? Jordan’s trophy case does all of the talking. “He has more awards … MVPs, scoring titles, 6-0 in the Finals. He has accomplished more in his career.” Hussein believes that Jordan has impacted the game more than James, as a lot of NBA players today grew up inspired by Jordan. “He just changed the game … Go watch Michael Jordan highlights on Youtube and you’ll see what I mean.”
Drinking straight up milk is gross
Milk is another food product that is used quite often, mixed with so much of what we eat. Julia Nguyen, a senior, says drinking milk by itself is a massive ick of hers. Milk is such a relied on ingredient in the food world, but drinking a glass of warm milk is controversial to many. “It makes your breath smell bad and your mouth taste gross,” Nguyen describes. Nguyen is lactose intolerant, so milk in general does not add any positives to her digestive system. “[To all the milk drinkers] you guys have interesting taste buds, sorry y’all.”
If women have to take birth control, then men have to have a vasectomy
Livy Stills, a senior, doesn’t find the sense in the expectation that women should take birth control, get an IUD, or follow other pregnancy protection methods while men don’t have to carry any weight themselves. She puts it simply, “If a guy has a gun, why does everyone around him have to wear a suit of armor? Just unload the gun.” Stills believes that men have to share a part in lowering the risks of pregnancy, as they already share part of the process. “If you disagree, why do you think women have to do all the protecting?” Stills asks.
Marvel movies suck
Ysabella Anaya, a senior, doesn’t understand the hype that has built up for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) over the last decade. Marvel Studios is one of the most critically acclaimed film production companies. They’ve owned the big screen when it comes to your favorite superheroes becoming more than a comic. But the MCU has had a hectic run, releasing 32 films dating back to 2007, which has been a confusing storyline for Anaya to keep track of. “There’s too many movies; it’s all so confusing now. There’s too many main characters, too many stories going on at once that you have to tie together. It’s all so complex. Their fanbase is crazy too,” Anaya claims.
