Fall is full of many amazing sights, activities, opportunities, food, and more! Since I was little, my experiences and memories from the fall have really shaped my love for the season. Here’s what I think are the 10 best things about fall that make it the best season.
Leaves Changing Colors
Picture it. Fall starts, the colors of the leaves start changing; maroon, burnt orange, and gold, slight hints of brown. A light breeze gives us showers of leaves, carrying them, forming a carpet on the ground. I love being able to go on walks, admiring all the breathtaking colors and scenery. Isis Vortigern and Phoebe Burns, sophomores at Franklin High School, say that the vibes of fall, especially the leaves changing colors, is one of their favorite parts of the season.
Fall Outfits
When this time of year comes around, you can wear just about everything. Sweaters, cardigans, Uggs, hats, scarves, tights, leggings, sweatpants, jeans, and get away with plaid acceptably. Nela Phoonkwan, a sophomore at Cleveland High School, says that wearing cozy clothes like sweaters, jeans, hoodies, and Uggs is one of her favorite things about fall. Similarly, Audrey Rodriguez, a sophomore at Franklin High School says, “My favorite things about fall are the sweaters I get to wear, the apple cider and hot cocoa, the hay rides, the cozy feeling.” Another part of fall fashion that makes this the best season is maroon, hunter green, chestnut brown, and mustard yellow: the ideal colors for fall clothing.
School Events
Fall is the season in which I romanticize my life the most. When school starts and everyones just getting used to everything, there’s no hard exams yet. You can finally see your school friends that you haven’t seen all summer, seeing how much they’ve changed. Soccer, volleyball, and football season are in full swing, and everyone is getting together for games. Homecoming comes around, having you delicately pick out the perfect dress to wear. Followed by creating unforgettable memories with the people you’re close with, whether you go with your friends or a date.
Baking
Baking is one of my absolute favorite things to do in the fall. Cinnamon rolls, apple crumble, various types of pies, snickerdoodle cookies, festive cake pops, and of course anything chai, pumpkin, or ginger. Seasonal baked goods truly round out fall’s superiority as I challenge myself to find and try new recipes. The aroma of cinnamon, pumpkin spice, and apple always takes over my whole house, leaving me with a cozy feeling.
Pumpkin Spice Everything!!
Pumpkin spice lattes and chais are back in season along with so many other pumpkin spice drinks, desserts, and snacks. I recommend going to Starbucks, Trader Joes, and Dutch Bros for their seasonal treats. It’s not really fall unless you indulge in pumpkin spice. The taste of nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and clove make the feeling of fall complete, which is the best feeling ever.
Decorating
Decorating for fall and Halloween is always so much fun. Stores like Target and Fred Meyer have finally put out their fall and Halloween selections. Clove, cinnamon, pumpkin spice, vanilla, apple cider, and sandalwood candles. Big soft blankets with pumpkins, ghosts, leaves, skeletons, or plaid designs are so festive and cute. Lights or wreaths, signs, and pillows too!
Halloween
Haunted houses, corn mazes, and hay rides. Fall is home to one of the best holidays around, Halloween. Picking out pumpkins at the pumpkin patch, then carving them and roasting the seeds until they’re crunchy. Staying up late to watch horror Halloween movies with friends. Some of my favorites to get in the Halloween mood are “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Halloweentown,” “Beetlejuice,” “Halloween,” “Scream,” “The Conjuring,” “Annabelle,” and “The Nun,” just to name a few. When people dress up their pets in Halloween costumes, handing out candy to little kids during Trick-or-Treating. Themed photo shoots, Halloween parties, dressing up as ghosts in white sheets. Halloween can be fun at any age.
Fall Weather
The air is crisp, the bright blue sky hidden in the early morning fog. When the mornings are chilly and you can see your breath. The smell of the air when it’s about to rain. Waking up to see the sunrise or going on a walk to watch the sun dip below the horizon. When it’s not too hot and not too cold, only the perfect temperature.
Music
Fall and Halloween music is superior. I recommend making a fall playlist with your favorite songs that give off fall vibes. There are so many different genres of music that inspire the fall mood, but my fall repeats are Taylor Swift’s albums “Red,” “Evermore,” and “Folklore.” Songs like “All Too Well,” “This Is Me Trying,” and “Evermore” are songs I’m definitely adding to my fall playlist. In my opinion, sad songs set the mood in the fall while it’s foggy or rainy and I’m hiding in my warm and cozy candlelit room.
“Gilmore Girls” and Other Fall Films
“Gilmore Girls” is the perfect show to watch in the fall, especially the first season. The intro, the town, the clothes, the festivals, the overall whole vibe just gives fall. I know so many people who always rewatch “Gilmore Girls” in the fall. If “Gilmore Girls” isn’t your speed, some other fall themed movies to get you in the cozy mood are “Hocus Pocus” and “Coraline.”
However, not everyone agrees with me that fall is the best. Deacon Dawson, a freshman at Grant High School, says his favorite season is winter because his dad runs a ski bus that takes kids, including Dawson, up to Meadows (a ski and snowboard site on Mt. Hood) to do runs down the mountain. I went on the ski bus last year with some friends and it was very fun, but it can get super cold in the winter and it made me and my friends nauseous. Vortigern says her favorite season is summer because we don’t have school. “I love fall, but it’s harder to enjoy it when we have school,” While it’s nice not having school, the weather and scenery is so much better in the fall, it makes having school worth it. Plus, there are many good things that come with school starting.
This fall, try to get outside, notice the leaves changing colors, take away these ideas, and maybe try something new. Fall is the season I love most; it reminds me that things are always changing and that’s okay.
