I have a feeling we all remember the excitement we felt last year when we were given a two week spring break; little did we know that a whole year later we would still be experiencing that same break! Nevertheless, I am here to offer ways to stay entertained during our second spring break in lockdown. Let’s prepare for round two!
Jewelry making: Making your own jewelry is such a fun and easy way to express yourself, and all you need is a YouTube tutorial and some supplies! A good place to find supplies is Beads at Dusti Creek, a local bead shop in SE Portland. Making jewelry has become more and more popular during the COVID-19 pandemic: “…I saw a lot of TikToks about how to make rings with wire, spoons, etc.,” says Addison Jensen, a sophomore at Madison High School, and it’s true! So many different people are starting to express themselves through jewelry on popular social media platforms like TikTok.
Having a picnic: Whether you have a picnic with family, friends (while maintaining a safe distance), or even alone in the sun, a picnic of any kind is an amazing way to spend your time. Picnics are perfect because they are so versatile, they could be in your backyard, a park, and even a car. Mt. Tabor is so beautiful in the springtime and is the perfect location to have a memorable picnic.
Reading a good book: If you have recently been wanting to read a good book but just can’t find the time, since staying at home is strongly encouraged during spring break this year, it is the perfect time to pick up a good read. Even if you haven’t enjoyed reading before, I’m sure there is the perfect book for you, and it could be a very fun adventure to look for it! This is an especially good activity if we have a rainy spring break, because the combination of rain, a warm drink, a warm blanket, and a good book is the best.
Starting a new collection: Starting a new collection of any kind can be super easy, and it gives you something to look forward to! Having a collection can act as a motivator for you to get work done, because once you finish, you can reward yourself by adding to it! There are so many things you could collect: crystals, stuffed animals, piggy banks, or anything that interests you. It doesn’t matter if it’s a little bit embarrassing as long you get excited about it.
Redecorate your room: We already spend enough time in our rooms, so why not make it even more personalized to you? Re-doing your room could mean many different things; it could be as simple as hanging some new art pieces to your wall, all the way to a complete makeover. It is so important to love the space you are in the most, and just as (if not more) important to have a cute Zoom background.
Go on a bike ride: Bike rides can be so relaxing, and they are a good source of exercise. Biking on a warm day with the wind in your hair is such a good feeling, especially when you are with friends. Another plus to biking with friends is that it is a COVID-safe activity, and you get the social aspect we have been missing recently. Since Portland is a very bike-friendly city, you can bike almost anywhere and there are some beautiful trails that would be perfect for you and your friends.
Binging a new show: Binging a new show makes time go by so fast, you’ll be done with the series when you feel like you just started it! With no school for a week, it gives you time to watch that one show you’ve been wanting to but just haven’t had the chance yet, and I know there is a series that popped into your head when you read that, for me it’s the new Netflix original series Ginny & Georgia.
I know we are all looking forward to this break, so why not make the most of it by trying new things? You’ll never know how much you enjoy something until you experience it; you could even find your new favorite quarantine activity!
