Street style is all about expressing one’s personal fashion sense in a casual and comfortable way. There are some essential pieces that any fashion-forward individual should have in their street style wardrobe.
A good pair of sneakers is essential. It’s no secret that sneakers have become a staple in street style, and arguably one of the most important components of any outfit. Lilyan Nimo, a senior at Franklin High School, says, “I think shoe games are a very big aspect of street style.” She elaborates saying, “you can participate in street wear with basic shoes like Converse or a simple chunky shoe, but New Balance, Nike, Adidas, are sneaker brands that are incorporated into street wear heavily.” Amare Mouton, also a Franklin senior, says, “whenever I pick a fit I always start with my shoes, it’s really the base of the outfit.”
From loose-fitting jeans, cargo pants, and high-waisted jeans, there is also a lot of diversity in terms of pants style and material. Nimo says, ”I love a pair of baggy cargos that sit low on the waist, they are so comfortable and casual but a thoughtful piece in an outfit/wardrobe.”
Graphic t-shirts are another staple in street style. Whether it’s a vintage band tee or some kind of graphic print, a statement t-shirt can tie an entire outfit together. Nimo says, “Graphic tees are a great, easily accessible item of clothing you find thrifting or shopping.” Thrifting has become an essential part of street style as well. Thrifting allows affordable and unique pieces that can truly make your outfit one of a kind.
Street style is more than just a fashion statement, it’s a reflection of different cultures and it’s really important to acknowledge that. Black culture has had a big influence on street style. Many elements of hip hop fashion, such as baggy clothing, sportswear, and sneakers, were initially popularized by Black artists and performers throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Black cultural icons, such as Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Aaliyah, and many more have played a role in shaping street style trends we see now. Today, social media has played a significant role in the rise of street style. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have made it easier than ever to discover and share new styles and trends. Nimo says, “definitely social media like Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok fashion-based creators” influence how she dresses when it comes to street style.
It is important to know that street style isn’t just about the clothes you wear. It’s about expressing yourself. Muton states, “honestly just wear what you personally like to wear, who cares what people might think of that fit you put on.”
