Fall sports have quickly jumped into full force at Franklin High School, and Franklin teams are experiencing exciting seasons. With many chilly evening athletic events ahead of us, both under the lights and in the gym, now is the time to read up on your favorite Franklin team, or find out what their next event is.
With more attendance and fan participation in school sports events, Franklin Activities Director, Leadership Teacher, and Head Cheer Coach Megan Humphreys is excited to bring back school spirit at games. “There are a lot of people interested in showing up and hyping up our teams…that paired with our cheering on the sidelines…is going to be really cool this year.” Besides boosting school spirit, one of the team’s goals is to attend as many different varied sports events as possible in order to connect with and support more teams. New this year is the consolidation of the multiple levels of cheer into one team; there is no varsity or junior varsity. Students looking to watch the cheer team can attend other athletic events, assemblies, and any other events put on by the Franklin Associated Student Body.
After many successful years, the Franklin Cross Country team strives to continue to build their thriving program, led by Coach Jacob Michaels, Coach Ashley Fanning, and Coach Rob Jamieson. According to Michaels, “it’s a super exciting season and we have a highly motivated team and we’re looking forward to bringing glory to Franklin High School by being one of the elite teams in the state, [in] both men’s and women’s cross country.” Coach Fanning adds that one of the goals of the teams, besides continuing their legacy of success, is, “making sure that everyone loves running…[and] making sure that [they] prepare [the athletes]…to run for a long time.” The Varsity and JV Women, and Varsity Men had a strong showing at their recent home meet, sweeping the top places by either six or seven places. While there are no more home meets, students can check Trivory or @franklin.xc.tf on Instagram and find them at Varsity Districts on Oct. 26.
Yet to begin league play, the Franklin Women’s Soccer team has been working hard to be competitive in every game and approach the season with enthusiasm. The season has been going well so far according to Varsity Women’s Head Coach Diana Diaz-Diurych, who says that, “[the team’s] goal has been to get more shots on goal and [they] have been doing that…putting the ball in the back of the net.” She is also excited about the level of team communication and “field vision.” So far this season the varsity team has had a 4-2-2 record. Beyond the competition aspect, Diaz-Diurych says that she wants the team to be “a space where people can come put stuff aside for 90 minutes and have a good time, be competitive, and enjoy being with [their] teammates.” Women’s soccer, as a program, has been working on being more cohesive, making sure that games at all levels are being publicized. The Franklin Men’s Soccer team currently has a 2-3-1 record. Students can attend their Senior Night home game on Oct. 20 against Roosevelt High School. Franklin Men’s Soccer updates can be found on Instagram @fhsmenssoccer.
So far this year the Franklin Varsity Volleyball team has a 1-6 record, and they have an upcoming home match against Benson on Oct. 10. Also at Franklin is the Franklin Men’s Volleyball team, but they are currently a school club and not an official school team. The Franklin Football team has been off to a strong start, with a perfect win record. In their first game, against Aloha High School, they won 38-13. Students can attend their next home game on Oct. 7 against Grant High School.
After years of varying restrictions on fan attendance and support at athletic events due to COVID-19, Franklin is just starting to get back into the swing of things and the fall sports teams are ready. Students can find upcoming fall sporting events on Trivory or Instagram.
